Wireless Toyz CEO Joe Barbat Asks “Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?”

June 16th, 2011 No comments

Does using a cell phone correlated with a higher cancer risk?

Does excessive, long-term use of cell phones cause cancer?

The World Health Organization issued a press release on May 31, 2011 indicating that the use of cell phones possibly increases the risk of certain brain cancer and tumors.  The operative word here is “possibly”.

The big worry seems to be about Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation, a form of electromagnetic radiation, being absorbed by the brain causing glioma (a malignant type of brain cancer).  To give you an idea of how RF compares to other types of radiation that you may be familiar with:  RF is low frequency radiation, whereas, X-rays are high frequency radiation.

The articles that I have been reading since this recent release from the WHO all have some very ambiguous adjectives being used in the studies.  I have not seen one article where a doctor or scientist has definitively stated that “yes, cell phones cause cancer.”  The big asterisk here is that cell phones possibly, may be, and could be carcinogenic to humans.  As with anything that “could, may, or possibly” be harmful to us we have a tendency to both take precautions and be skeptical at the same time.

Let’s take a quick look at how we behave under similar circumstances such as protecting ourselves from harmful UV sun rays.  We don’t know for sure that we’re actually going to get cancer if we spend a day at the beach.  So we take precautions such as using sunblock, wearing UV lenses in our sunglasses, and/or using an umbrella to avoid direct sun exposure.

What are some of the measures that we could take as users of a necessary technology to help reduce our exposure to possibly harmful radiation exposure?  Many of us already do this by using a speaker phone feature, a Bluetooth accessory, or by texting instead of direct calling.

The fact is it could take years before a definite conclusion can be reached on whether or not there is a direct correlation between cell phone usage and the development of cancer.

Note:  The studies the World Health Organizations reviewed were regarding cell phone users that used the technology over a 10-year period.  More research and variables will definitely be needed before a conclusion can be reached.

CEO Joe Barbat Discusses Current Wireless Industry Trends

June 16th, 2011 No comments

Joe Barbat Founder of Wireless ToyzSome interesting wireless industry products that are trending right now include Near Field Communications (NFC) –which is an emerging technology enabling close range device-to-device interaction.  There are two main technologies with NFC, open NFC and secure NFC.

Open NFC refers to the interaction of two NFC-enabled devices, or the use of an NFC device to read a chip embedded for example, in a card or other print medium. Secure NFC, on the other hand, is about using your mobile device as a credit card or virtual wallet to pay for things by swiping it over an NFC reader.

Currently, NFC is mentioned as one of the most exciting areas in the wireless industry in terms of revenue generation. Projections show that up to 700 million NFC-enabled mobile phones will be sold by 2013.

NFC tags, which cost only a few pennies, offer huge potential for advertisers, retailers, and others to reach, reward and stay in touch with their customers. These tags can be promoted at any location such as a coffee shop, a phone retail store, or even at a grocery store, with immediate and measurable results. The great thing about NFC tag reading is that it requires very little existing infrastructure, other than a mass market of NFC-capable devices out in the industry and recognition from marketers as to the benefit of such tags.

In addition to reading tags, with open NFC consumers can easily connect their NFC phone with another one, simply by tapping the two devices together. In this way, you can easily swap content, such as photos, or play two-player games, without the need for a time-consuming hook up through Bluetooth.

Joe Barbat’s Wireless Toyz History

Joe Barbat founded Wireless Toyz in 1996 as a single pager kiosk inside his father’s video store in Farmington Hills, Michigan. By identifying and filling a crucial consumer need, Joe Barbat brought in sufficient revenues to open his own store in only a year.

Under Joe Barbat’s direction, Wireless Toyz began franchising in 2001, following the success of the company’s first store. By the end of 2004, Joe Barbat had established 62 Wireless Toyzs. In 2006, Wireless Toyz had 180 locations across the country, and the number of franchises continues to grow. Joe Barbat attributes Wireless Toyz’s success to its innovative business model, which allows customers to compare several service plans and products side-by-side.

The Wireless Toyz business model has also been of great benefit to the Wireless Toyz franchisees, and Joe Barbat takes pride in providing others with a means to launch their own careers. Business owners who switch from a single service provider model to become Wireless Toyz franchisees often see their sales increase with the transition, according to reports published in 2005. Joe Barbat has also cited Wireless Toyz’s 98% franchisee satisfaction rate as crucial to the company’s success and compared its growth to viral marketing, stating, “People discover a good thing, and they pass it on.”

Joe Barbat sold WirelessToyz to a private equity firm in December 2007. In 2008 and 2009, the company was negatively impacted for a number of reasons. Recently, Joe Barbat re-acquired Wireless Toyz to help re-align the company and spearhead its growth into a nationally recognized name again.
